April 2011 Bestsellers

Maria Melilo with book Make Every Man Want You by Marie Foleo

For another month, a sexy girl is making waves on the Brazilian bestseller list. In February O doce veneno do escorpião (Panda Books, 2005), a memoir by a former call girl nicknamed Bruna Surfistinha jumped back onto the bestseller list because of the release of a Brazilian movie based on the book.

Leading the international bestseller list is Make Every Man Want You by Marie Forleo. And why? Maria Melilo, a rising starlet and winner of a popular reality show Big Brother Brasil appeared on TV reading and recommending the book. The publisher, Universo dos Livros, printed an additional 100,000 copies of a new edition that portraits Ms. Melilo on the cover and includes her foreword. Book signing events are being organized by the publishing house so the fans of Ms. Melilo can meet her and, of course, buy Marie Forleo’s book.

On the Brazilian author list, Ágape (Globo Livros) by the celebrity-priest Marcelo Rossi continues its long-standing reign as the number one title. According to the publisher, over 2.5 million copies of the book have been sold since its publication in September 2011. That makes Ágape one of the bestselling books in the entire history of the Brazilian book market.
The Rio de Janeiro’s Big Four publishers -– Sextante, Record, Intrínseca and Ediouro -– still dominate the bestselling Brazilian publishers list.
